Once your application is approved and you’ve made your first payment, you can start using services covered by your health insurance plan.
If you are applying during open enrollment between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, your insurance will start on Jan. 1. If you apply in January (before the Jan. 31 deadline), your insurance will start on Feb. 1.
People who experience certain life changes can apply through special enrollment any time of year. Their insurance will start the next calendar month.
If you enroll in Medi-Cal after finding out you qualify through our application, your insurance will start on the first day of the following month.

You can get health insurance through Covered California regardless of income if you’re a California resident and a citizen, or you have satisfactory immigration status.

Usually, people over 65 do not qualify for Covered California, but there are some exceptions.
Recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) do not qualify for insurance through Covered California.
No, people who are not lawfully present do not qualify for Covered California. However, they can use the Covered California application to see if they are eligible for other programs, such as Medi-Cal.
Families that include immigrants can apply -- only people who are applying must provide Social Security numbers or information about immigration status.
You can also apply for your child even if you don’t qualify. Applying for your eligible child won’t affect your immigration status or chances of becoming a permanent resident or citizen.
