What Counts as Income

In order to determine how much financial help you can get, you will need to estimate your household income for the current year. Include income from anyone you claim on your taxes.

  • Federal taxable wages
  • Tips
  • Self-employment income
  • Unemployment compensation
  • Pandemic Unemployment Compensation ($300/week)
  • Social Security
  • Social Security Disability Income (SSDI)
  • Retirement or pension
  • Excluded (untaxed) foreign Income
  • Investment income
  • Alimony (only if divorce or separation finalized before Jan. 1, 2019)

Doesn't Count as Income

  • Child support
  • Gifts
  • Economic impact/stimulus payments (come from the IRS as a result of the COVID-19 emergency)
  • Veteran disability payments
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Workers' Compensation
  • Proceeds from loans (like student loans, home equity loans, or bank loans)
  • Child Tax Credit
  • American Rescue Plan stimulus payments
  • Golden State Stimulus payments
