Covered California provides dental coverage to children in both the exchange's individual and small-group employer markets.

Children's dental coverage is one of the 10 essential health benefits required under the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The requirement highlights the importance of good dental care and its role in kids' overall health.

The participating companies are offering stand-alone plans for children's dental coverage in the first year of the new health benefit exchange, which has open enrollment Oct. 1, 2013, through March 31, 2014. Covered California is exploring ways to combine pediatric dental coverage with its medical health plans beginning in 2015.

Children that qualify for Medi-Cal will receive dental services through Medi-Cal's dental program.
